Two days after a man strangled a woman and committed suicide at Ambernath, the police on Thursday said the 32-year-old killed the woman because she refused to marry him.

According to the police, Netram Chadrabhan Verma, a labourer, got into an argument with Anchan Shriram Mahalle, 20, an engineer, at his home in Kansai on Tuesday.

Mahalle, a Diva resident, was living with Verma from Sunday, as her parents were out of town, said police. “The two, who hail from Wardha, were in a relationship, but the woman’s parents were against it. Verma was harassing the woman for marriage for the past one year. He had called her to his home in Ambernath to have a final discussion on the topic. When she refused, he killed her,” said a police officer.

After killing Mahalle, Verma texted her parents, “She [Mahalle] is dead and I am committing suicide. Please take our body from Ambernath”.

“Verma strangled Mahalle and hanged himself using Mahalle’s dupatta. He also texted his address to Mahalle’s parents. They sent their relatives to the spot, who then took the duo to a hospital,” said Nandkumar Kenjale, officer from Shivaji Nagar police station.
