Mumbai mechanic strips, sexually assaults six-year-old girl, arrested

A 37-year-old mechanic allegedly stripped and sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl who had gone to his shop to get her cycle repaired at Santacruz. The girl went back home crying and alerted her family members, who beat up the accused and then handed him over to the local police. He has been booked for rape.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8am on October 27. When the girl spotted the man seated inside a rickshaw, he asked her to come next to him in the rickshaw. He then stripped and sexually assaulted her. The accused then threatened to beat her up if she told anyone about the incident.
The girl went home crying and informed her aunt, who alerted her mother.
The aunt, along with other family members, took the girl to the spot. When the girl identified the accused, he tried to flee the spot. However, one of them caught hold of him and the group then thrashed him in public, and then handed him to the police.
The accused lives alone in Mumbai, while his wife and three children live in their village in Bihar.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rape and under section 4 (Penetrative Sexual Assault), 8 (Sexual Assault Sexual Harassment of the Child) and 12 (Sexual Harassment of the Child) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The accused was produced before a Sessions court and remanded to police custody.
