The BKC police recently arrested four men for allegedly collecting money as parking charges from motorists who parked their vehicles at Motilal Nagar in Bandra (east).
The racket had been running for the past few months, the police said.
Irfan Khan, 30, Rehmat Ali Shah, 30, Navi Ali Shaikh, 30, and Kalim Ali Shaikh, 37 are residents of Motilal nagar and have criminal records, the police said.
According to the FIR registered by a social worker, the four men were collecting money for parking space in a plot owned by a private company in Motilal Nagar. When this came to the notice of the company, they sealed the exit points.
After the plot was shut, they carried out the business on the road for the past 15 days. Many vehicles need parking space there as the area is near Trade Centre in BKC, which is a busy spot.
The accused had also made a fee chart wherein they charged Rs50 for three hours. The police seized it.
“We are investigating to find out how much money these people made from the racket. The four have been booked for offences previously. One of them had assaulted a government servant.
A FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
“The road where the racket was run comes under the MMRDA. Private guards in the area had not looked at the issue,” an official said.
