They informed the police, who could not ascertain whether the foetus, which had been dumped outside the slum, was a boy a girl. It appeared to be five to six months old, said officials.

The foetus was sent to Siddharth Hospital for a post-mortem. “We found a foetus outside the slum. We are awaiting the hospital’s post-mortem report,” said L Vhanmane, senior inspector, Kurar police station.

Police registered a case against an unidentified person under the Indian Penal Code. They have started questioning slum dwellers to find out who the foetus’ parents were.
