MumbaiOn the second day of cross-examination in the Sheena Bora murder case, her mother Indrani Mukerjea’s lawyer questioned the family’s driver Shyamwar Rai to punch holes in the statements he gave to the police.Mukerjea’s lawyer Sudeep Pasbola questioned Rai about a statement he gave to the Khar police station after his arrest. Pasbole asked Rai about an alleged incident after 2012 (when the murder took place), where Rai wanted money and Mukerjea refused. “Did you need money after 2012 and did Indrani not help you?” Pasbola asked Rai in Hindi. Rai denied such an incident took place. Pasbola asked Rai if he had mentioned this to the Khar police, which Rai denied too. Pasbola, however, went on to allege that Rai told the Khar police about his demand for money. Pasbola sought the court’s permission to confront Rai with this statement. The court allowed the plea, but the court staff could not find Rai’s statement to the police. The prosecution realised the original statement was not submitted to the court. CBI prosecutor Kavita Patil said the accused asked for a copy of the statements of witnesses. Patil said this was supplied to the accused, but originals were not deposited in court. The court then asked the Khar police and CBI to submit a copy of the original. Pasbola grilled Rai with questions such as: What time did you leave from your house? You stay in Vakola, how did you travel to Bandra to reach Carter road on the day you were arrested? Rai, however, evaded them with either ‘I don’t know or I don’t recollect’. Bora was killed in 2012 but the case came to light in 2015 after Rai’s arrest. Rai is the crucial link in the case which led to the arrest of Indrani and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna for the murder.
