Sagar Thakkar aka Shaggy, the prime accused in the Thane call centre racket, who is said to be in Dubai, had allegedly gifted a high-end Audi RA — worth Rs2.5 crore — to his girlfriend on her birthday. Investigation had earlier revealed that all the arrested accused also drove high-end cars.

Sources claimed that Shaggy liked to live a lavish life and showered expensive gifts on his girlfriend to impress her. Police are now investigating the source through which the payment was made to purchase the car, and are also trying to trace his whereabouts.

A resident of Mira Road, Shaggy originally hails from Gujarat. Sources said he rarely visited any of the offices or meet the call centre employees. During questioning, most of the employees claimed they had never seen Shaggy even once since their appointment. Sources added that he was contemplating on opening another bogus call centre in Mira Road .

An inspector from Thane commissionerate said, “During interrogation, a few of the accused told the investigating officers that Shaggy loved to spend and managed three girlfriends at the same time. One of the accused even claimed to have travelled with Shaggy in one of his high-end cars when he visited Gujarat.”

Gujarat police have also initiate a probe in the case, as Shaggy is suspected of owning 17 call centres that were mostly managed by his friends. While nine call centres are claimed to be in Mumbai, the rest are in Gujarat. A total of 2,000 people work in these call centres.

A police source said, “He is the only person in Gujarat who owns an Audi RA. We might confiscate the car after questioning his girlfriend. He was in touch with her almost 24x7. Also, we are trying to trace the source that helped him pay for the car and clear its paper.”
