Thane tele fraud case: US federal officials speak to Thane cops

Officials from the US’ Drug Enforcement Administration were on Friday speaking with the Thane police officials probing the Mira Road call centre scam. The centre got its employees to pose as revenue officials to cheat US citizens.

Sources in the Thane police told HT that FBI and IRS officials from the US are also likely to meet with the Thane police.

On Tuesday, the Thane police had raided three call centres on Mira Road after they found out its employees were scaring loan defaulters in US into making payments. Victims would be asked to submit their bank details, which the callers used to hack into their accounts and swindle the savings.

A US national of Indian origin is suspected to be the kingpin of the international racket, and the police are probing the role of agents based in that country.
