Two police constables, assigned with prisoner escort duty, have been placed under suspension, after a prisoner facing child sexual abuse charges escaped from their custody in February. A preliminary inquiry indicated that one of the constables was engaged on his mobile phone, taking advantage of which, the accused escaped.
Police naik Balu Jadhav and constable Chaitanya Gurav, attached with the Tardeo local arms division, were assigned with the task of escorting Mohammed Badshah Shaikh, 23, from Arthur Road Jail to the sessions court and then back to the jail.
Shaikh was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO)Act in 2017 for allegedly abusing a minor girl. He was in judicial custody since then.
Leaving Shaikh in Gurav’s custody, Jadhav went inside the court. Seeing Gurav busy on his phone, Shaikh escaped. When Jadhav came back and could not spot Shaikh, the constables began looking for him, said a source at the local arms division. On failing to find him, Jadhav and Gurav informed their headquarters about the incident, following which a first information report was filed against Shaikh at the Colaba police station. He is still at large.
A senior police officer said, “Prima facie, the constables’ act is seen as negligence and irresponsible approach to work. To send a strong message to others in the department, the constables have been placed under suspension. The inquiry is underway. They will face strict action if found guilty.”
