The death of Congress MP Gurudas Kamat has thrown up the question of who will be the party candidate in the city’s North West Lok Sabha constituency. City unit chief Sanjay Nirupam, former city unit chief and former Kalina MLA Kripashankar Singh and former MP Priya Dutt are some of the names that have cropped up.

“Sanjay Nirupam had expressed interest in contesting from the constituency about six months ago. Kripashankar Singh could be another probable for the post. Priya Dutt had reportedly conveyed to the party her unwillingness to contest in 2019, but amid the changed political atmosphere she may contest,” said a senior Congress leader.

Another leader close to Kamat said that though the possibilities are bleak, if Maharookh Kamat, wife of Gurudas, decides to contest the polls, she will be given preference over others as candidate. Kamat’s son, Sunil Kamat, is not interested in politics, he added.
