A 20-year-old woman on Monday gave birth to a baby girl inside a Dahanu-Virar local at Virar station.

The woman, Sony Patel, a Saphale resident, had boarded the divyang coach of the local with her 25-year-old husband, Ajay, at Saphale.

They were going to get a medical test done on Patel at a government hospital in Virar as she was nine months pregnant.

When the train was nearing Virar, Patel started experiencing labour pains and as soon as the local stopped at the station, Ajay called for help.

A woman porter, Vimla Patil, rushed to their help. Along with other women porters on the train, they shielded Patel and helped in the delivery of the baby girl.

Meanwhile, a doctor with the Western Railway (WR), deployed at the station, rushed to the coach with his team and completed the delivery procedure.

They then rushed Patel to an ambulance parked outside platform number 3A and she was admitted to a government hospital.

“Both the mother and her daughter are doing fine and will be discharged on Wednesday,” said a doctor of the hospital, requesting anonymity.
