The police said the bodies of Usha Kangutkar, 68, and her daughter-in-law Akshata, 42, were found by Akshata’s son, Rajdutt, at the Jai Hanuman co-operative housing society in front of Ruparel College. They were rushed to Sion hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

The police said the deaths did not seem to be the work of an intruder and circumstantial evidence led them to suspect Akshata.

The police suspected that Akshata strangled Usha and then consumed poison. Neighbours said they heard a lot of commotion from the flat. They added that the duo were fighting, when they suddenly became silent. Investigations revealed that there were frequent skirmishes between Usha and Akshata.

Later that night, Usha’s provisional post-mortem report revealed the cause of death as strangulation.

Akshata’s husband Laxmikant, a computer operator, was away at work when the incident came to light.

“The family is in a state of shock,” said the officer.

The Shivaji Park police station registered a case under Indian penal code section 302 against Akshata.
