MUMBAI: A 64-year-old, who was riding his motorcycle, died after he was knocked down by a car driven by a student at Chunabhatti on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) early Sunday. The accused, who fled from the spot in the damaged car, was arrested by police at Kurla.

According to police, preliminary investigations point out that the accused may be under the influence of any substance, but they are awaiting medical reports. Damji Nagda, a resident of Mithagar in Mulund (East) who owns a general store, was heading to his residence, when he was knocked down by a speeding car, said police. “Nagda had visited his son’s in-laws at Elphinstone Road and was returning during the early hours,” said BD Jadhav, police sub-inspector, Chunabhatti police station.

The accident occurred on the northbound stretch of the EEH, which has seen many accidents in the past. Police said the Hyundai i10 car was driven by Akshay Avinash Kulkarni, 21, a science student.

Investigations revealed that the car hit the motorcycle from behind at a high speed. Nagda fell from the motorcycle and sustained grievous injuries and was taken to Sion hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. “Kulkarni sped away, after which few persons informed the police control room. Kulkarni was later held by officers from Nehru Nagar police station,” said Jadhav.

Kulkarni, a son of government servant and a resident of Nehru Nagar, was produced before a holiday court on Sunday and was granted bail. The accident occurred around 3.50 am beneath Ahuja flyover. “We have conducted a medical examination on the accused and the blood samples have been sent to see if he was driving under the influence of alcohol or not,” said Sunil Bhosale, senior police inspector, Chunabhatti.
