The civic body is already using mechanical brooms to clean roads in BKC (BandraKurla Complex), SCLR (Santacruz-Chembur Link Road), Western Express Highway and Eastern Freeway for a couple of years now. Civic officials said the idea behind using these brooms is to keep the roads with busy traffic clean 24 hours.
A senior civic official from the solid waste management department (SWM) said, “Leaders from all political parties have agreed to the idea of using the brooms. So, we are awarding contracts in the island city and its western suburbs.”
According to the contract, the operators would purchase and operate the brooms. The contractor will be paid Rs 2,700 per day for every kilometre.
Chief engineer (SWM), Siraj Ansari was not available for comment.
