Court grants bail to 5 held for cow slaughter

AMBERNATH: Five men, who were arrested from Ambernath on Sunday on charges of cow slaughter, were released on bail on Monday. They have been asked to visit the police station everyday till September 15.

The police have also taken samples of the flesh, which have been sent to the Kalina forensic laboratory.
A few residents on Sunday morning alerted a beat marshall in Ulanchand claiming some people had allegedly killed cows. The constable reached the place to find three dead cows and rescued two calves.
The five accused — Shafi Ibrahim Quereshi, 40, Riyaz Mohammed Shaikh, 38, Azad Nizamuddin Quereshi, 26, Sajjad Nizamuddin Quereshi, 33, and Yusuf Kashif Shaikh, 45, — are Ambernath residents and work as butchers.
The accused were booked under sections 429, 34, of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995.
The police are yet to find the seller.
A police officer from the Ambernath police station said, “The arrested accused were released on bail. They have not told us who sold the cows to them. They said they owned the cow.”
Nilesh Dhumal, investigating officer, Ambernath police station, said, “The five accused were given bail and they have been asked to report to the police station everyday. We are investigating further.”
