MUMBAI: Vaishali Gade, 29, who lives with her mother at the police colony at Worli, has little faith that the government will fulfill its promise of a job for the son of traffic constable Vilas Shinde, who died on Wednesday.

Gade’s own father died while on duty in 2009. Soon after, she applied for a job to help her take care of her mother. However, seven years later, he is still waiting to hear back about her application.

Gade’s father was a constable in the local arms unit. One day in 2009, he fell ill at work and started vomiting blood. He was rushed to hospital but passed away. Gade, who was 22 at the time, was advised by her father’s colleagues to apply for a job.

“I applied for a job but my application is still stuck. I have stood at the office for hours to ask about my application but have received little help,” Gade said.

Last year, she met Ahmed Javed, then police commissioner. Gade said, “The commissioner asked the department to look into my case. I had not finished my Class 10 exams at the time. I have since done so, but they have still not considered my application. I am not asking for my father’s old job, but one that suits my qualifications.”

While her job application continues to languish, Gade helps her mother with the housework. She said they cannot continue living on her father’s pension.

“The working conditions for policemen are terrible. They (the government) do not care for the living but will pay homage once a policeman is dead. I would not recommend working in the police force to anyone,” she said.
