The delay has been caused by the decision by the University of Mumbai to once again allow Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) to conduct the process, even after receiving series of complaints against the company over the past few years.

“MKCL has been conducting this process for the past few years, so they already have all the data in place. Instead of transferring all the data to another online service provider, we decided to contact MKCL again to conduct this process,” said MA Khan, registrar, MU.

He added that the delay in starting the registration process was owing to maintenance trouble which should be solved within the next few days.

Over the past few years, various processes that needed help from an online service provider were being conducted by two or more companies, including MKCL and Mindlogicx. This academic year, the process of preadmission registrations for first year degree college entrants, which was otherwise conducted by MKCL, was instead handed over to Exxon Automation Pvt Ltd.

The decision was taken after MU officials had decided to bring about uniformity in the system by hiring one company to handle all the online features of the university.

With the process once again being handed over to MKCL, college principals have shown concern over the sustainability of the process.

“MKCL has already faced much flak during examinations as well as something as basic as printing hall tickets and getting information of students on the hall tickets without any errors. We hope the students don’t face trouble again,” said the principal of a suburban college.

In October 2015, TYBCom semester 5 students were running from college to college on the day of their board examination as errors in the hall tickets created confusion among examination centres.

MU officials are sure such errors will not creep up anymore. “MKCL is taking time to bring out a foolproof method to conduct registrations without any errors. The process will start within a week,” added Khan.
