According to civic officials, the rain in the catchment areas of the seven lakes that supply water to the city hasn’t improved the total water availability. Consequently, the water cut will continue for another month.

The availability of water in the seven lakes is six per cent of the total capacity. The total capacity of the seven lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres, while the available water stock is 0.96 lakh million liters, compared to last year’s 3.32 lakh million litres.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a water cut in August last year. “The catchment areas have got moderate rain, but it is not enough. We will take a call only when we feel the storage is at a level that can be termed safe for next year too. The current stock is 70 per cent less than last year,” said a civic official from the hydraulic department.

The civic body plans its water supply from October 1 to July 31. To supply water to the citizens without any water cuts, the BMC needs 14.47 lakh million litres of water in the catchment areas in the next three months.
