Manjula Chellur takes charge as Bombay high court’s CJ
MUMBAI: Justice Manjula Chellur took charge as Chief Justice of the Bombay high Court on Monday. Justice Chellur — the second woman judge to occupy this post — was administered the oath by Maharashtra governor C Vidyasagar Rao at the swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan on Monday morning.
She replaced Justice DH Waghela, who retired earlier this week after a brief stint.
Born on December 5, 1955, Justice Chellur began her career as an advocate in Bellary, and was appointed as the district judge in 1988.She attended Warwick University, London, in 1997 for a fellowship on Gender and Law.
She became the first woman Chief Justice of the Karnataka high court in September 2011. In August 2014, she took charge of the Calcutta High Court as its first woman CJ, where she had been serving until now.
She is the daughter of C. Bheemappa Chetty and Rangamma Chetty.
After acquiring an Arts degree from Allum Sumangalamma Womens’ College in her home-town, she joined the Renukacharya Law College in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) and obtained her LL.B degree in 1977.
In April 1988, she joined the Karnataka Judicial Service as a district judge.
She was appointed the first woman judge of the Karnataka High Court in February 2000 and became a permanent judge in August that year.
