Re-exam takers may miss last FYJC online round

MUMBAI: Students who appeared for their Class 10 supplementary exams held in July may miss out on the online admissions to the first year junior colleges (FYJC) this year.

While the filling up of forms for the final round of online admissions begins on Monday, the results for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) supplementary exams have not been declared yet. But the education department is thinking about holding a separate round for them.

The department had announced on Friday that the final round will be the last chance for students to apply for admissions through the online process. The admission portal will be open on Monday and Tuesday, while the final merit list will be announced on Wednesday.

This will be the last merit list as there will not be any offline admissions this year. The Bombay High Court had ordered all FYJC admissions to be held online to bring about transparency in the process.

Education minister Vinod Tawde had decided to hold the exams in July instead of September-October to save students from losing an academic year. But the delay in announcing results will defeat the purpose

“We are worried about these students and we are considering the possibility of holding a separate round for them once the results are announced,” said BB Chavan, deputy director of education, Mumbai region.

Even if a separate round is held for the students, they might not have many colleges to choose from. “Vacant seats remain only in the smaller colleges that are not popular among students. Few seats that opened up in coveted ones will fill up by the final round,” said a student.

So far, around 2.02 lakh students have been allotted 2.78 lakh seats in the five rounds and two special rounds. The final round will be held to accommodate students in the nearly 75,000 vacant seats.
