“The main mastermind, who owns three call centres in Mira Road, was identified as Sagar Thakkar alias Sagy, 23. We suspect he has fled out of India,” said a police officer, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

“We had sent a team to Gujarat to find him,” added the officer from Thane police.

The 17 accused used to train and help the staff call US citizens and teach them to threaten and extort money from them.

They also gave them accent training and helped in the recruitment process, said police.

Another police inspector from Thane crime branch said, “The 17 accused are constantly changing their statements. While those who are given judicial custody have been sent to Taloja jail.”
