Unhappy with scores, city students plan to repeat test next year

MUMBAI: The results for the National Eligibility-cumEntrance Test (NEET) have brought little or no cheer to many students in the city, who were expecting better scores to get into institutes and courses of their choice.

While many plan to move to paramedical courses, some plan to take NEET next year to better their score.

“I didn’t check my score as I was not very confident about the examination. I have applied for a paramedical course on the basis on my MH-CET score. Many of my friends are really disappointed with their marks and have decided to take a break to prepare for the entrance test next year,” said Nuhi Jalal, 18, one of the candidates.

She has sought admission under the diet and nutrition course at a paramedical institute in the city.

Students also pointed out their marks are very low compared to students from other states.

“I have secured a seat in a medical institute in Kolhapur, but was hoping to score well in NEET, so I could apply for admissions to institutes closer home. My score is too low and I have no choice but to stick to the seat I got on the basis of based on my MH-CET score,” said Riya Vakil, 18, one of the candidates.

HT had earlier reported how the state government was to release admission rules for medical and dental seats in private and deemed institutes.

Admission rules give the criteria for admissions, including eligibility, percentage of seats under different quotas, colleges and courses available at private and deemed institutes, fee structure, among others, which is otherwise made available weeks before the results.

“Even though the results are out, students still don’t know if the admissions will be centralised in Maharashtra or the percentage of seats allocated for them or from those outside Maharashtra. There is too much ambiguity,” said Rajesh Jain, member, Parents Association of Medical Students (PAMS).

When HT contacted the directorate of medical education and research (DMER), officials said the rules and schedule will be released soon.
