MUMBAI: Manuwar Hussain, 19, a daily wage labourer in a paper-cutting factory in Sativli,Vasai (East), nearly lost his right wrist after it was severed by the razor-sharp blades of a slicing machine on Saturday evening.

Hussain had been cutting paper logs when the accident occurred, leaving his palm dangling from his forearm.

As he was bleeding profusely, the company offered him first aid and rushed him to Arth Hospital,Vasai. After a nine-hour surgery from 6.00 am to 3.00 pm, doctors managed to reattach his palm and wrist. Hussain will regain the use of his wrist after six months of rest,said doctors.

“This was one of our toughest surgeries, as the portion was completely amputated. It took us around 9 hours to rejoin the palm and wrist as we had to rejoin all the nerves and take care of various tissues,” said the surgeon,who did not wish to be identified.

“We will take care of Hussain’s medical expenses and pay his monthly salary till he is fully fit,” said a company official.
