Two other accused, Ajay Pandey and Gulam Rasool Sheikh, who were arrested on May 28, led the police to Mhatre, who is now the main accused in the case. A fourth accused, Rajesh Singh, who allegedly planned for having Patil murdered, is absconding.

Mhatre was produced in the Thane court on Tuesday and booked under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, relevant sections of the Arms Act and the MCOCA.

Patil died after he was fired at and stabbed by three unknown assailants at the Abhinav Public School in Bhayander (E), of which he was a trustee.
