The demolition drive was carried out under the guidance of Additional Collector Dhananjay Sawarkar.

Simpreet Singh an activist attached to social organisation, Ghar Bhacho Ghar Banao Andolan, alleged that the authorities did not issue the mandatory 24-hour notice before demolishing the hutments.

“The collector issued a notice at 4 pm on Wednesday, while the demolition drive started at 12 noon on Thursday.”

The demolition drive will continue on Friday as there are around 3,000 hutments in the area and only 1,000

could be demolished on Thursday.

Some hutments caught fire during the dive, however, the slumdwellers alleged that the demolition squad had put up the fire deliberately.

The collector’s office has denied the allegations.
