2 missing boats return safe with 10 fishermen

Two fishing trawlers with 10 fishermen who had gone missing early on Wednesday returned on Friday after spending 48 hours in the choppy seawaters.

The two trawlers — Christ Raja and Jagat Jyoti — had set out from Madh village in Malad (West).

A total of seven to eight trawlers had gone missing on the day an alert was sounded for Cyclone Phyan.

Meanwhile, nine more bodies were recovered from Ratnagiri district on Friday. The death toll in the trail of destruction
left by Phyan in the Konkan region touched 11 on Friday.

A large number of boats still remain missing.

“Nine more bodies were found today taking the toll to 11,” said S.C. Mohanty, officer on special duty with the government’s disaster management unit. He said the estimated losses due have reached Rs 40 crore. “We will be able to assess the complete damage by Tuesday,” he said.
