A 21-year-old girl from Mulund committed suicide on Sunday after her boyfriend allegedly refused to marry her.

Naseem Haroon Shaikh, left behind a suicide note, blaming her boyfriend for pushing her to take her own life. The police have arrested her boyfriend Sanket Tambe, 26, for abetment to suicide. The police said Tambe, who works as a cook at a hotel, and Naseem were together for the last five years. “The two wanted to marry, however their family members were opposed to it on religious ground,” said police inspector D Jadhav.

Naseem hung herself when her family members were not at home. Tambe confessed to the police that he was in a relationship with Naseem. “However he maintained that he did not promise her marriage”, added Jadhav.
