The police arrested Abdul Sheikh (28), a resident of Indira Nagar in Mahim, on Sunday.

Sheikh and the victim were neighbours in Indira Nagar chawl and knew each other for many years.

Their families were close and would visit each other often.

The police said six months ago, the victim got married and shifted to Muslim Nagar, a neighbouring locality. Sheikh would often make calls to her, the police said.

The frequency of his calls gradually increased and he allegedly started making passes at the victim.

The police sources said that the accused had started forcing the victim to meet him.

The victim, who is a homemaker, had recently complained to Sheikh's wife about his behaviour. Sheikh's wife confronted him and this led to an argument.

Annoyed, Sheikh decided to teach the victim a lesson. He went to her house when her family members were out.

"The accused then raped her and threatened to kill her and her husband if she complained to the police or her family," said Senior Police Inspector, L Donde, of Shahu Nagar police station.

The victim lodged a complaint with the Shahu Nagar police on Sunday and the police arrested Sheikh.
