The matter came to light when the minor recently attempted suicide.

The police said that on May 5, the victim consumed phenyl and was taken to St George Hospital in Fort.

The hospital authorities later alerted the police. The victim told the police about the incident during their interrogation on Saturday.

“The accused first raped the minor in January 2012 when the girl was alone at home, as her mother had gone to work. On January 28 this year, he raped the girl again,” said Manoj Bohre, sub-inspector, Cuffe Parade police station.

The victim, a Class 8 student, said, in her statement to the police, that the accused threatened her against revealing the incident to anyone.

The accused was arrested immediately after the police recorded the girl’s statement.

The police registered a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and section 4 (penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The police said the accused works in the fish market, while the victim’s mother works as a housemaid. The family resides in a chawl in the Cuffe Parade area, police said.
