A minor tiff between two groups outside Bhavan’s College in Andheri ended in the murder of a 46-year-old man and assault of five people who suffered injuries in the fight and have been admitted to hospital.
The DN Nagar police arrested five people from Juhu galli who allegedly killed the victim Majid Abbidi Baig, 45, who had gone to his 19-year-old nephew, Aqib Salim Akhtar’s college. Akhtar is a Bcom student.
The police said Baig and his accomplices were leaving for their house at Samta Nagar in Kandivali (East) when the fight took place at 11pm on Tuesday.
Police inspector, M Inderkar said Baig along with his accomplices exited the college after a function and reached Vrindavan Hotel outside the college when the accused, Shakil Qadir Shah, 21, who was standing outside the hotel, intercepted the victim.
“Shah demanded to know from the victim, what they were doing in the area so late. The victim did not respond to the question. Getting irked by Baig’s silence, Shah asked the question again,” said Inderkar.
This gesture irked Baig. Within seconds the victim and the accused got into a fight, which turned violent.
“Realising that he was overpowered by the victim and his accomplices, Shah called up his friends and called for backup. His friends arrived at the spot carrying bamboo sticks and knives and attacked the victim and his friends,” added Inderkar.
In the attack Baig suffered severe injuries while his accomplices also were victims of the attacks.
“The locals gathered at the spot informed the police. We reached the spot and rushed Baig and other injured people to the hospital where Baig was declared dead,” said Inderkar.
