A 65 year old man tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at Oval Maidan opposite Bombay High Court on Wednesday.
He was saved after a passerby informed police about the incident and he was rushed to the hospital.
The Azad Maidan police said the senior citizen, Devidas Shantilal Thakker, a resident of Bora Bazar at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, had purchased two bottles of ‘insecticide’ from vendors outside Oval Maidan.
Thakker consumed the first bottle inside the maidan, but before he could consume the other bottle, Bharat Joshi stopped him.
“I saw the man drink from the bottle and knew something was not right. I rushed towards the man and prevented him from drinking from the other bottle. I could not understand who to call for help so I dialed 100 and informed the police,” Joshi said.
Within 15 minutes the police reached the spot and rushed Thakker to JJ hospital. Police said Thakker is out of danger.
“Thakkar had taken this step because of a feud with his brother over a property issue,” said a police officer from Azad Maidan police station, requesting anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media.
“He was frustrated over his brother claims on a shop which Thakker has in the Bora Bazar area. We are investigating whether he had contacted the police earlier with regard to the dispute,” said Police Inspector, Yashwant Thorawde from the Azad Maidan police station.
“We have registered a case of attempt to suicide and will wait for Thakkar to regain consciousness to record his statement,” Thorawde added.
