Eight of the 10 people who died in Friday’s building collapse were from the Shaikh family, who lived on the first floor of Smruti building.
Of the eight, four were children. The deceased have been identified as Abdul Kareem Shaikh, 30, wife Fareeda Shaikh, 25, their two children Shakeer, 6, and Tasmiya, 3; brother Makdoom Shaikh, 28, his wife Aliya Shaikh, 21 and their two kids, Husna, 4, and Humza (4-months old).
Abdul Kareem worked in a shoe showroom in Vikhroli, while Makdoom was a vegetable vendor in Mumbra. The brothers’ mother, who lived in the same house with them, was out of town from the past few months.
According to the locals, the family had been living in the 34-year-old building for at least 10 years.
“When they were warned by their neighbours that the building was collapsing, they took the children and started to run out. They had reached the ground floor when a slab fell and killed all eight of them instantly,” said Nabilal Shaikh, the brothers’ nephew.
The bodies of the victims were recovered from under the debris on Friday morning, “When Makdoom's body was found, he was still holding his two children,” said another family member.
While seven of the bodies were sent to the Thane Civil Hospital for post-mortem, the last one was taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa.
