The state plans to speed up its enrollment drive to issue Aadhar cards in the state.
“We have requested for more machines. Maharashtra has the highest enrollment rate and we plan to cover at least 90% of the population by December,” CM Prithviraj Chavan told members of the state council on Thursday.
Aadhar is a unique identity number which can be used to get benefits from government schemes. However, Chavan said the state has also issued instructions that people who do not have an Aadhar card will not be denied any facility. In the discussion, Congress MLC Sanjay Dutt said that some students were being denied a scholarship as they did not have the card.
“There was some confusion earlier, but the chief secretary, in a letter on March 6, has said it is not mandatory to have the card,” Chavan said.
