Maqdoom Shaikh, a three-month-old boy who was kidnapped from outside Mahim church on March 23, was reunited with his family on Monday.
During investigation, the police learnt that a local, Jaggu, had also gone missing since the day of the incident. The Mahim police then received a tip-off that Jaggu, along with a couple, was in Nallasopara where they planned to sell off the boy. Before the police team could reach the spot, the trio managed to escape.
Conducting parallel investigations in the case, a team from unit 5 of crime branch comprising inspectors S Mane and A Satavase went to Jaggu's hometown Kolkata. The team managed to track the couple, identified as Ali and his wife Payal, who had helped Jaggu in the kidnapping. "The team rescued Maqdoom Shaikh, who was with Payal," said senior inspector D Ahire, crime branch (unit 5).
The arrested couple told the police that Jaggu was in Mumbai. A police team led by inspector S Rane laid a trap and arrested Jaggu. "It gives us satisfaction as the boy's mother had been depressed since the day the boy went missing," said Ahire.
