Accused wanted to rob woman as she was alone: Cops
Devraj Hanumantrao Kanka, the 28-year- old man arrested for allegedly molesting and attempting to throttle a nurse on board a Borivli bound train early on Saturday, had told the police that he may have committed the crime as he was drunk, but the police believe his intention had been to rob the victim of her gold chain.
It appears that the accused had been seated in the compartment next to the women’s and entered the ladies’ compartment at Grant Road on spotting the 23-year-old victim alone in it, the police said.
“He did not find a chain around her neck and as she was alone in the compartment, he decided to make a move on her,” said R Trivedi, senior inspector, Mumbai Central Government Railway Police (GRP).
Kanka has been involved in crime for more than eight years now and has at least 10 chain snatching and house break-in cases registered against him.
This is the first time he has been booked for a body offence, the police revealed.
“It is because he has such a criminal background that he was able to attack her. A petty chain-snatcher would not have the guts,” said Trivedi.
The police said Kanka has two cases against him registered with Kalyan railway police and four with the local police in Kurla.
During interrogation, he said he has four cases against him in Andhra Pradesh too, from where he hails.
The GRP said Kanka’s family is fed up with him.
“He has been in and out of jail since 2011. When we got in touch with his family on Sunday, his parents asked us to keep him in custody,” Trivedi said.
The police said Kanka has been changing his statement constantly.
He started off denying the crime, but on Sunday afternoon, he told them that he may have done it as he was drunk.
His blood report, to ascertain if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, is awaited.
