ATS officials arrest 4 men

Rakesh Maria, additional director general of police (ATS) said that four men were arrested near Maratha Mandir at 2.30pm on Tuesday. “We stationed officers near Maratha Mandir after we received intelligence that the four men, who played a key role in the shoot-out, would be coming there,” said Maria.

The accused have been identified as Qayoom Sheikh, Ahmed Munshi, Sajid Parvar Khan and Adnan Syed. The four accused allegedly provided the two shooters, Indra Khatri, 27, and Sayyed Billal Mustafa, 29, with weapons.

ATS officials said Syed is the cousin of Umaid ul-Rehman, a Mumbra resident who masterminded and ordered the hit.

The police said Umaid fled the city with his wife immediately after the killing.

The shoot-out took place on May 17 when Khatri and Mustafa opened fire outside Kaskar’s house in Dambarwal building near JJ hospital. Zaveri, 44, suffered six bullet injuries and died before he could be admitted to hospital. The shooters were caught by the Pydhonie police and handed over to the JJ Marg police.

The ATS handed over the custody of those arrested on Tuesday to the crime branch as the case has been transferred to them for investigation. While crime branch officials refused to comment on the matter, Vijaysingh Jadhav, DCP (HQ 1) confirmed that the probe has been handed over to the crime branch.
