BEST bus runs over 2-year-old girl in Bandra

A two-year-old was run over by a BEST bus on Monday when she was playing outside her house in Bandra (East). The bus driver was thrashed by the locals and is undergoing treatment at Lilavati Hospital, the police said.

Around 7am, Chandni Patil, 2, was playing outside her house at Indranagar Pipeline slum. She was crossing the narrow road when a BEST bus (MH 01 LA 6599) route no 310 coming from Kurla (West) and going to Bandra Terminus hit her.

The accident occurred when the driver Aatmaram Gaikwad, 57, was taking a turn. “The girl was crushed under the wheel and died instantly,” said senior inspector Prashant Bagade of Nirmal Nagar police station.

Gaikwad was apprehended and beaten by the locals. Gaikwad, who sustained grievous injuries, was first rushed to a local hospital but later shifted to Lilavati Hospital.

“We have registered a case of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from doing his duty against four unidentified men who assaulted Gaikwad. We have also booked Gaikwad for causing death due to rash and negligent driving,” added Bagade.
