A bus conductor with the state transport (ST) has been arrested for raping a mentally ill woman. The 22-year-old victim is reportedly two months pregnant.

A bus conductor with the state transport (ST) has been arrested for raping a mentally ill woman. The 22-year-old victim is reportedly two months pregnant.

Nitin Thakur, a resident of Naupada, works as a conductor at the Panvel ST bus depot.

“For the past two months, Thakur has been exploiting the woman, who is mentally unstable,” said JD More, senior inspector with the Naupada police. Thakur befriended the victim through one of her friends. “He promised to marry her and raped her twice. However, he refused to honour his word. The victim, a resident of Rabodi, is two months pregnant now,” More said.

The victim lives with her mother and is employed at a firm in Thane. A rape case was registered under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. “The accused was absconding after a case was registered on Saturday. However, we arrested him from Panvel on Sunday,” More said.
