A civic schoolteacher was booked on Friday for caning a student in class.

A civic schoolteacher was booked on Friday for caning a student in class.

The police said the complainant, Sonu Chandalia, said her son Arun, 6, studies in Class 1 in the municipal school at Vile Parle (E) and the teacher scolded Arun on Friday for not bringing a notebook for her subject, and caned the child leaving welts on his palms and thighs. When Arun came home, his mother took him to VN Desai Hospital.

Narayan Patil, senior inspector of Vile Parle police station said: "We found that Arun and two other students were fighting when the teacher entered and she scolded them. We are trying to ascertain whether she caned the students."

A case of assault under IPC section 323 has been registered. No arrest has been made.
