Mumbai University officials filed a complaint against the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) on Tuesday after members from the group blackened the face of Vilas Shinde, controller of examinations, in the Kalina campus on Tuesday evening.
MNVS members allegedly barged into Shinde's room and blackened his face on account of the leak of a third year Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) paper last week.
On Sunday, the university had announced that it would be holding a re-examination for that paper.
"This is not the way in which anybody should behave with the officials of Mumbai University. We will not tolerate any such behaviour in the university," said a statement issued by the university after the incident.
Shinde was taken to a hospital after the attack.
Meanwhile, the MNVS patted its back by circulating a message admitting they had blackened Shinde's face and had demanded a resignation on account of the paper leak. "Re-exam should not be conducted, why should students suffer for this," read a message from Sainath Durge, MNVS vice-president, who blamed Shinde for poor administration in the examinations department.
Vinayak Saude, senior inspector, Bandra-Kurla Complex police station, said, "We have sent Shinde for medical examination. Once that is done, we will record the statements of all the parties involved and decide on under what sections of the Indian Penal Code the case has to be registered."
