Kokil was posted as a senior police inspector at the Marol police training school and was scheduled to retire in October this year.

Sources in the office of the director general of police (DGP) told HT that the inquiry, which was conducted by a deputy commissioner of police, had implicated Kokil in the case. The inquiry officer had recommended severe departmental action against Kokil.

During his posting as the senior inspector at MRA Marg police station (at Crawford Market) in 2010, Kokil had been alleged of seeking a bribe from a group of hawkers in the Manish Market area. Kokil had countered the charges by saying the hawkers had been backed by a politician to implicate him in a false case.

“On the recommendation made by the inquiry officer, Kokil was removed by the DGP, who is his appointing authority,” a source said, adding that this was for the first time that section 25 (2) of the Bombay Police Act (BPA) had been invoked.

He told HT that his removal was an ‘act of revenge’ by higher-ups in the department. “I made a corruption case against former additional commissioner of police AK Jain during my posting with the anti-corruption bureau . This [his removal] is a reaction to that action,” he claimed.
