Cops identify deranged man who assaulted teen

The deranged man, who had assaulted a college student late on Sunday, has been identified by the police. Bachauli (22), a resident of Nehru Nagar slums in Kurla had allegedly assaulted Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s distant relative with a stick, the Juhu police said.

On Sunday at 8.30 pm, Payal Gupte (19), a first year arts student of Mithbai College along with her friends was coming out of the college premises after attending an event when Bachauli attacked her.

Gupte suffered head injuries and was rushed to Sunjay Hospital by her friends. She has got 15 stitches on her skull, the police said.

“Before attacking Gupte the accused had struck a few passersby with the same stick. They did not sustain injuries,” said Senior Police Inspector Deepak Katkade of Juhu police station.

Eyewitnesses said that Bachauli hit Gupte on her head and another student on his shoulder before fleeing.

During investigations the officials found that Bachauli was roaming in the area with a stick and walloping vehicles.

“Bachauli was booked in a similar case earlier too. He was staying with his four brothers but was thrown out of the house few months back. His wife left him taking their child four years ago due to his illness,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (west region) Amitabh Gupta.

Bachauli, who is from Kolkata, was earlier undergoing treatment there and the doctor had prescribed him some medicines. But he had stopped visiting the hospital, the police said.
