Our elected representative have put forth a demand that they be allowed to board a bus from the front door. This comes after Manmohan Chonkar, a Shiv Sena corporator from Bandra (East), was refused entry into a bus after he jumped the queue and tried to get in from the front door.

In protest, Chonkar returned the free bus pass that all corporators are entitled to get.

Chonkar said, “It is unfair that BEST staffers and cops can use the front door. We have to keep rushing to places and attend meetings. If we were to wait in the queue, we would never make it in time. It is necessary that we be allowed to get in from the front door.”

Chonkar suggested that this be prominently displayed on BEST buses. “Just like it suggests that senior citizens and pregnant women are allowed to enter from the front door, the board should be changed to include us corporators.”

Rajhans Singh, Congress leader of opposition and MLA, said: “I support this demand. This should have been done a long time ago.”

Sena corporator Sunil Prabu said, “I can completely understand Chonkar’s feelings. BEST drivers and conductors need to be told that corporators are to be respected. It is wrong that they treat us in such an unfair manner.”
