In the last two months, there have been a series of disruptions on Central Railway’s suburban network due to technical snags and derailments.

Commuters were left stranded as services had already been curtailed due to regular maintenance work on Sunday.

“The railways must do something about providing timely information to commuters stranded at stations,” said Rajesh Prajapati, a commuter who was travelling with his family. “There was no information on what had gone wrong as the crowd at stations was swelling,”

Eyewitnesses said the train’s pantograph, the equipment on the train that draws power from the overhead wires, got entangled and broke. The stranded local train had to be towed away and a diesel locomotive brought in to clear the tracks.

Local train services on the Central Railway were running 30 minutes late, officials said.
“The incident took place in the morning and trains from Kalyan to CST were diverted to the fast track from the slow track,” a Government Railway Police official said.
