Shakil Khan had arrived by an Emirates flight EK-502 on Tuesday night.

Customs officials stopped him after he crossed the green channel and was moving towards the exit gate at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Upon inquiry, Khan, who came in a flight from Dubai, told the officials that he was not carrying any undeclared items with him. On checking Khan’s luggage, however, officials recovered 257.24 grams of gold jewellery.

Advocate Ravi Hirani who represented Khan said that his client was produced before amagistrate’s court and was released on bail of Rs 75,000.

Hirani said that Khan had brought the jewellery for the purpose of his niece’s marriage. “Khan had gone to Dubai for the first time and the gold was not for smuggling purposes but for his niece’s marriage,” said Hirani.

Khan told Customs officials that he had brought the jewellery on credit basis.
