DC-AC conversion between Kalyan, Thane in first week of May
After missing the earlier deadline, the Central railway (CR) is set to switch from 1,500V direct current to 25,000V alternate current between Kalyan and Thane sections from the first week of May.
After missing the earlier deadline, the Central railway (CR) is set to switch from 1,500V direct current to 25,000V alternate current between Kalyan and Thane sections from the first week of May.
The change will allow the CR to run more trains, increase the speed of existing trains and reduce their energy bill. A senior railway official said that along with slow and fast corridors between Kalyan and Thane, the fifth and sixth line between Thane and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) will also be converted into AC system instead of DC.
“The DC-AC conversion will take place before May 5,” said the official. He added that they are awaiting the approval of the commissioner of railway safety for the transition.
According to sources, after conversion, the running time of suburban locals could be reduced by 3-5 minutes between Kalyan and Thane.
Initially, the CR had fixed January 26 as deadlines for DC-AC conversion, but the shortage of duel current DC-AC rakes pushed it forward.
Though the WR had transferred seven dual current rakes, for smoother operation, the CR will need more rakes.
