While Anjali Vishwakarma died on the spot, her friend, Poonam Shukla, who sustained fractures in her legs, was admitted to the Bhagwati civic hospital.

The duo, along with three other students — all Class VI students of Rani Sati municipal school in Dindoshi — was on their way to school around 9 am when the incident happened. “Anjali’s two friends managed to cross the road. Anjali’s head and abdomen came in between the rear tyres, while Poonam sustained fractures in her legs. Anjali’s 12-year-old brother, who was behind her, escaped unhurt,” said the police.

The dumper was on its way to Goregaon from Borivli, the police said.

Passersby caught hold of the driver of the dumper, Riyaz Shaikh (23) and forced Shaikh to escort the injured students to the hospital. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been lodged against the driver. Anjali’s parents were in a state of shock.
