The police said the fight began when a mob gathered outside the Khar police station. The mob was protesting against the alleged police inaction in the death of Ganesh Jadhav, 35. Ganesh had allegedly been assaulted by a bouncer, Sunil Jadhav, of Le Sutra Hotel at Khar on April 3 and died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

Sunil, who had been arrested earlier, was booked on charges of murder.

The mob, after approaching the police station, went to the hotel where Sunil was employed and began throwing stones. Sherkhan Pathan, 40, the constable was deployed at the hotel to prevent any untoward incident.

In a bid to control the mob, Pathan sustained head injuries and was rushed to the hospital by his colleagues.

“Along with Pathan, three hotel staff members sustained minor injuries. The trio was taken for treatment to Bhabha Hospital and were discharged soon after,” said, Baburao Mukhedkar, police inspector of Khar police station.

However, since Pathan was in a serious condition he had to be rushed to Lilavati Hospital.

“We have also seized a vehicle. The eight arrested accused were produced in the court. They have been remanded to police custody till April 15,” added Mukhedkar.

On April 3, Ganesh, who was on leave, was asked to come to the hotel to celebrate India’s World Cup victory.
The police said Ganesh, a resident of Sunder Kamlanagar at Sion, and two of his friends were under the influence of alcohol. He went to the hotel to get an ice cream.

When the staff refused, an argument erupted and Sunil was called in. Sunil allegedly assaulted Ganesh who sustained grievous head injuries and was rushed to Sion Hospital.
