While 75-year-old Maniklal Shah was last seen on Monday afternoon, it is suspected that his wife, Surbala, 70, may have died two days ago, the police said.

Maniklal, a paediatrician, and Surbala, a former gynaecologist, lived with their adopted son, Neeraj, 23, in Parkview Housing Society, Shankar galli lane. Neeraj is mentally challenged, the police said.

On Tuesday, Neeraj, who works in a dry fruit store, told his employer that a foul smell was emanating from the house. Concerned, the storeowner alerted a Goregaon-based relative of the family, who came to check on the senior citizens, only to find them lying dead on adjacent beds.

“The post-mortem report revealed that Maniklal died of pneumonia and Surbala succumbed to cardiac arrest. We have registered cases of accidental death,” said Mahesh Patil, zonal deputy commissioner of police.

A neighbour of the couple said Surbala had been bedridden for the past two years due to recurrent back and limb issues.
