Patil made the announcement in response to demands by the Opposition for specific measures to ensure that the youth from the region are not influenced by Maoism. Legislators demanded jobs for families in the region.

Patil denied reports that a large number of Maoists had infiltrated the state, but admitted that the armed rebels were targeting local people, especially police informers and politicians.
