Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the case will be tried in a fast track court and assured stern punishment to the guilty.

The victim was attacked because the family suspected that her son had eloped with one of their daughters. The police have arrested five members of the Desai family. Minister of state for home Satej Patil said: "We have asked Satara superintendent of police to investigate and send us the details. Stern action will be taken against the guilty."

The state women's commission has also sought a report, while the Republican Party of India has threatened an agitation if the attackers are not punished.
